Patrick Cordingley

Patrick Cordingley moved from Gauteng to the Western Cape in 2000. This most beautiful part of South Africa, allows his emotive spirit to contend with rigors of explosive colours he sees in his environment. How to cope with turquoise, mauve, orange, red, green, yellow, indigo and all other brilliants, worked into a landscape, still life or portrait, is Patrick's forte. His artistic strength lies in the ability to fuse vibrant colours into a coherent and pleasing image.

He is an intense person, and the small things in life are very important to him. For him there is no short cut to an objective, almost a Victorian attitude in contrast to his background. He is of Croatian descent, his parents immigrating to South Africa after the Second World War.

The influence of Van Gogh and Gauglin in his art is far more pertinent than meets the eye. Patrick feels that one must have suffered poverty and deprivation, to reduce one's soul to the basics and bare essentials of life, in the quest for creativity. The experience of, and confrontation with these elements, leads to his clear, clean and "down to earth" depiction of the colourful landscapes, seascapes, architecture and people of South Africa.

Since his first exhibition in Johannesburg in 1993, he had many other solo and joint exhibitions, and his work has become highly sought after by private and corporate clients.

"Ujamaa" Makonde wood Sculptures

A substantial hand carved sculpture by the Makonde* from a single piece of African blackwood (Ebony)locally known as "Mpingo" in the style of "Ujamaa".

Also known as "trees of life" or "people poles", the intricate ujamaa carvings depict a column of naturalistically-carved intertwined human figures. Often appearing as though locked in dance, these are the works which brought Makonde their fame - lively and exciting, full of movement, rhythm and balance.

The word ujamaa has many meanings - brotherhood, cooperation, family, togetherness - and was also a by-word for post-independence Tanzanian politics: after freedom (uhuru) came ujamaa - unity, which was used to describe the government's collective social policy. The meaning in the context of the carvings is clear: from one block of wood comes the unity of the family, society and ancestors.

The older generation is depicted on the bottom, supporting (literally and symbolically) later generations. The central figure is usually a mother surrounded by many clinging children. This theme has its roots in the creation myth of the Makonde, in which a woman was the first human ancestor.

XOLILE WILLIAMS

About artist:

Born in Transkei, 38 year old Xolile Williams a self-taught artist was inspired by his grandfather, a woodcarver. He moved to the Western Cape in 1990 and enrolled for an art course at CAP (Community Arts Project). He first exhibited with the gallery in 1997 and in the same year had work featured in the lifestyle magazine House and Leisure. He was also featured in the Sunday Independent's Reconstruct of April 1999 and the Cape Times Art and Lifestyle in June 2000. In June 1999 he was selected to attend the 'Women's Memorial Legacy Project' at the Pretoria Technikon and exhibited a sculpture for the competition. Xolile is a multi-media artist working in wood, paints, stone, papier maché, cement and wire. His work explores and deals with contemporary social issues particularly related to our experiences in the country. This series of works comprises of woodcarving, papier maché, wire-work and paintings.

Imagine not being able to smile?

MM Galleries, through their initiative Project Smile SA, will host their first Gala and Art Auction to raise funds for the Cape Town-based non-profit organisation Operation Smile South Africa.

The auction will see a host of South African and international celebrity smiles including go under the hammer for the good cause. Also included in the evening's festivities is the band Cuecumber Jazz who will provide the entertainment. The band has also recorded a specially produced single, which will go on sale at the gala event. All the money raised at the auction will go toward the NPO.

Operation Smile South Africa, who rely on volunteers - medical and non-medical - travels through various African countries operating and rectifying cleft lips and cleft palates for those who cannot afford it. The operations are done without charge.

Tickets cost R50 or R80 (including the Cuecumber Jazz CD). Children under the age of 18 enter for free. Cheese, fruit and wine are included in the price.

The auction takes place on Thursday October 14, at Amway House, at the entrance to the V&A Waterfront, 71 Dock Road, Cape Town, at 6.30pm.

I am very passionate about the arts in all shapes and forms. I would love to paint for a living as this is where my great passion lies. However, as this is not yet possible, I try and paint fabulous pictures with my food. Being a full time chef, I draw so much inspiration from my surrounds as I live on a beautiful farm, situated on the West Coast.

I try and bring this beauty across onto my plates, which have inadvertently become my canvasses. Unfortunately, these are consumed, so for more permanence, I paint in my leisure time, portraying the same beauty onto canvas. I am in awe by all the great artists past and present, and in their honour, to me, to complete a painting, is a very humbling experience indeed!

Jackie Noakes Born in Nottingham, England, Jackie settled with her parents in Africa at the age of fifteen. She spent her teenage years in Zambia where she began to sculpt with clay she dug from the river beds. During those early days, Jackie spent a great deal of time on horseback exploring the surrounding areas developing a love for the African bush and wildlife. Later as a newly-wed she and her husband lived adjacent to the Kafue National Park where a great deal of her time was spent studying the many species of African animals which roamed in abundance.

Later with their 3 small children, they lived near the Kafue River where their closest neighbours were many hippo families.

Today South Africa is home for Jackie and her family, where she continues to sculpt with a passion and love for her gift.

Her art has been exhibited in galleries throughout the world.

Como voce vai? This is a Portuguese greeting used often in Brazil, The nation I am from. You may be asking yourself, “What is Geraldo Bragah doing in South Africa?”I will gladly answer. I moved to this stunning nation about five years ago. During my stay here I have volunteered all my time for social work and helping the communities of South Africa/Muizenberg as well as other communities within Africa in any way I can.

I am not trained in painting and I have never been to an art school, I don’t even consider myself to be a painter. I first picked up my painbrush two years ago when the creation of this countryside and the beauty of South Africa people inspired me. I call this collection of work “Recollection and reflection”. It has been a labour of love and revelation.

Depict your smile and help campaign raise awareness

Imagine not being able to smile. Thousands of children worldwide are unable to smile, speak properly and have been shunned because they suffer from cleft lips and cleft palates – the fourth most common birth defect in the world. However, the non-profit organisation Operation Smile South Africa has been rectifying this. Operation Smile relies on non-medical and medical volunteers, who travel the world and rectify cleft lips and cleft palates with no charge to the patients or their families. Since 2004, the organisation has provided surgery to 1 040 patients and the number is still growing.

The organisation, with MM Galleries, is hoping to raise even more awareness for their campaign by asking the youth to enter their Project Smile competition. Project Smile is the brainchild of MM Galleries, whose owners, Omary Magambo and Eugene Marais, approached Operation Smile with their idea.

The pair decided to create an in-house programme to raise funds for various organisations. A resident artist at the gallery mentioned to Mr Magambo and Mr Marais that her son was born with a cleft palate and after doing some research on the subject, she came across Operation Smile. Soon after doing their own research the two men approached the organisation with their Project Smile idea.

It will take the shape of a competition culminating in fundraising events and exhibitions. The competition is targeting youth and asking them to use any medium such as drawing or sculpture, to convey their smiles and enter the competition. “It is an outreach and fundraising initiative aimed at encouraging creativity, innovation and adventurous works of art among the youth of South Africa. ‘Smile’ is the main theme of the project and all works will be designed and crafted centering on this theme. We will be collecting smiles and will be hosting annual fundraising exhibitions and galas,” said Mr Magambo.

“The idea really is for everyone to enter. We want people to get involved and to tell them that there are different ways that they can volunteer. We also want to tell people that you don’t have to be an older person to make a difference. Young people, children as young as two years old can enter the competition and draw their smiles,” said Ananda Nel, the executive director of Operation Smile.

The organisers are also hoping to get schools involved, she said. Targeting schools would raise awareness among young people, instilling in them the idea of volunteerism at an early age. “As the main objective of the project is to create awareness for the plight of children with facial deformities,” added Mr Magambo, “we are looking at youths from schools, colleges and universities to enter.”

They also have South African celebrities who will be drawing their smile. They are, however, keeping mum about who they are. Once the competition has closed, entries will be judged and the most innovative ones will be selected to form part of the fundraising exhibitions and gala events. At the gala event in June, some of the work will be auctioned.

We need people to help us to create awareness for the plight of children with facial deformities by distributing flyers, pamphlets and posters to the nearest schools, colleges, universities and other institutes .If we have more volunteers, we could go into more schools. Together we can create smiles and changes lives! One smile at a time...

About Project Smile South Africa

Project Smile South Africa is an outreach and fundraising initiative aimed at encouraging creativity, innovation and adventurous works of art production among the youths of South Africa.

The project Smile South Africa is the brainchild of MM Galleries. "Smile" is the main theme of the project and all works will be designed and crafted centering on this theme. Autographed "Smile" drawings and impressions will be artistically designed by various upcoming artists and put on photographs, paper, sportsman's t-shirts, builders' tiles, glass, sculpture, plates and clothing. The MM Gallery will be collecting smiles and will be hosting annual fundraising exhibitions and galas.

Project Objectives & Benefits

The main aim of the project is to raise funds for Operation Smile South Africa by creating a platform at the MM Galleries art gallery through which young and gifted artists showcase their wealth of talents. The other objectives of the project are:

To assist upcoming young artists with marketing and promoting their works;

- To promote and showcase various talents in the Cape region of South Africa
- To empower historically disadvantaged sections of the society
- To contribute to the economy through creation of meaningful employment and purposeful activity.

Core to the project strategy is involving and aligning the youth community in arts events as part of an indirect learning program to combat HIV/AIDS and any possible involvement in crime activities such as drug trade and theft.

Operation Smile South Africa is a non-profit medical services organization that provides free surgery and related follow-up care to children and adults with cleft lips and cleft palates in South Africa and in the Southern African region.

Project Smile South Africa Competition

To encourage participation in the project, the Project is commencing jointly with the Project Smile South Africa Competition. To enter the competition, please send your work of art with the “smile” theme to the MM Galleries art gallery at Shop 3, 31 Palmer Road in Muizenberg, Cape Town or via email and snail mail (see our contacts below) or alternatively at your institution. The first annual gala will be held on the 19th of June 2010 in Cape Town.

Entries to the competition will commence on the 26th of January 2010 and close on the 21st of May 2010. The top three entries will be selected and afforded an opportunity to participate in a pottery workshop at the renowned Fiddlewood studio in Claremont Cape Town. During the gala event the higher profile smiles will be auctioned and selected smiles given as incentive to patrons who would have purchased and attended the first gala event.
